Treating a patient
with gastric outlet obstruction complications depend entirely on the cause.
This may require a patient to undergo endoscopic therapy - dilating the
blockage using balloons or placing metallic stents that are self expendable, other
types of medical therapies and surgery to remove the obstruction.
Although the treatments vary depending on the type of cause, the most
commonly used methods are surgery and medication.
Medication:
Gastric outlet victims who have developed peptic ulcers, the oedema can be
relieved using conservative nasogastric suction management, electrolytes and
replacement of fluids or by using proton pump inhibitors.
Surgery:
In cases where the gastric outlet obstruction is significantly pronounced
and where therapy is seen as helpless, surgery may be necessary. However,
endoscopic therapy using balloons may also be used as an option to operation
but with minimal hope of success. The type of operation that works here is
referred to as antrectomy which involves removing some of the antral portions
of the stomach. Others include billroth I, a process in which the duodenum is
anastomosed to the distal stomach and vagatomy which refers to a procedure of
severing the vagus nerve.
